‘H’ is for Hedges

10th June 2026

Hedges are one of the most important features of Gloucestershire’s countryside. They provide homes for wildlife, shelter for birds and pollinators, help reduce flooding and soil erosion, and store carbon. They also shape the character of our landscape, creating the patchwork of fields and winding country lanes that make Gloucestershire so special.

That’s why CPRE Gloucestershire is proud to support the restoration and creation of hedgerows through our Hedgerow Heroes Project. Over the past three seasons, we have worked with communities, volunteers, farmers and landowners, we’re helping to plant and restore hedges across the county, strengthening wildlife corridors and reconnecting fragmented habitats.

Every hedge planted is an investment in the future. A single hedgerow can support hundreds of species, from nesting birds and butterflies to bats and small mammals. By helping hedges thrive, we’re helping nature recover.

As CPRE celebrates its centenary in 2026, we’re more committed than ever to protecting the countryside we love. Through Hedgerow Heroes, local people are making a real difference, one hedge at a time.
