‘G’ is for green spaces

17th May 2026

From rolling hills and river valleys to village greens and quiet footpaths, Gloucestershire’s green spaces shape who we are and how we live. They are places to breathe, to walk, to connect with nature – and increasingly, places that need our protection.

Green spaces are not a luxury. They support our physical and mental health, provide habitats for wildlife, help tackle climate change, and give our towns and villages their distinct character. Whether it’s the Cotswold escarpment, the Severn Vale, or a much‑loved patch of grass at the heart of a community, these spaces matter deeply to people across the county.

Yet Gloucestershire’s green spaces are under growing pressure. Development that doesn’t respect local character, the loss of countryside to poorly planned growth, and the gradual erosion of tranquil places all threaten what makes this county special. At CPRE Gloucestershire, we believe that growth should enhance, not harm, the places we love.

That’s why we campaign for policies that puts nature, climate and communities first. We champion well‑designed development in the right places, protect the countryside from unnecessary loss, and stand up for landscapes that define Gloucestershire’s identity. Green spaces shouldn’t be an afterthought — they should be at the heart of decision‑making.

But protection isn’t just about resisting harm. It’s also about growing something better. Restoring habitats, improving access to nature, and reconnecting people with the countryside all help ensure that green spaces can be enjoyed by everyone, now and in the future.

This year, as CPRE celebrates its centenary, we’re reminded that the challenges may change, but the core mission remains the same: caring for the countryside and ensuring it thrives for generations to come. Green spaces are part of our shared inheritance — and our shared responsibility.

If you value Gloucestershire’s green spaces, we’d love you to stand with us. Whether by supporting our campaigns, volunteering your time, or simply speaking up for the places you care about.
