Hedgerow Heroes Project

We are proud to be part of CPRE’s Hedgerow Heroes Project. But what exactly are we doing, why is it important, and how can you get involved?

CPRE’s Hedgerow Heroes Project

Hedgerows have long been an integral part of Gloucestershire’s agricultural landscape, supporting both the local ecosystem and wildlife. Sadly, since the mid-20th century, hedgerows across the county, like many other areas in the UK, have seen a significant decline.

This issue is not unique to Gloucestershire. To combat this issue, across the country, local CPRE groups have been working tirelessly to address this environmental crisis through the ‘Hedgerow Heroes Project’.

The call to protect hedgerows dates back to 1926, when CPRE’s founding manifesto first highlighted the dangers of ‘indiscriminate destruction’ of these vital natural features. The Hedgerow Heroes Project continues this mission, helping to restore and protect hedgerows nationwide.

To date, Hedgerow Heroes Project has successfully rejuvenated and created thousands of meters of hedgerow across the country, inspiring individuals and communities to understand the vital role hedgerows play in supporting biodiversity, protecting wildlife, and maintaining the beauty of the countryside.

Our work in Gloucestershire

Hedgerows are vital to Gloucestershire’s landscapes, wildlife and heritage, yet across the county, they’re in decline. Like CPRE groups nationwide, CPRE Gloucestershire is taking action through our Hedgerow Heroes Project.

We’re proud to have successfully delivered two project seasons, restoring and planting miles of healthy hedgerow — and we’re excited to share that season three (2025-26) is now well underway!

Discover below what we’ve achieved so far, and explore how you can get involved, volunteer, or support our current work to help protect Gloucestershire’s hedgerows for generations to come…
