To mark National Hedgerow Week, we’re delighted to celebrate the success of the third season (2025–26) of our Hedgerow Heroes Project and share our new short film. This season alone, over 2 kilometres of hedgerow have been restored across Gloucestershire.

This winter, more than 160 volunteers came together across nine sites to help strengthen Gloucestershire’s countryside. Local residents, landowners, schools and community organisations all played a part, contributing an impressive 708 volunteer hours over 28 volunteering days!

Hedgerows are an intrinsic part of England’s countryside. They help prevent soil erosion, store carbon, support wildlife and create vital corridors for biodiversity. Yet they remain under threat from poor management, inappropriate cutting, and removal for agriculture or development.

Often described as the stitching that holds together the patchwork beauty of the countryside, hedgerows are ancient boundaries that play a crucial role in tackling both the climate and nature crises. They also support sustainable farming by helping to manage livestock, improve soil health, and provide shelter and food for pollinators and other wildlife.

More on hedgerows

By restoring hedgerows through projects like Hedgerow Heroes, CPRE Gloucestershire is helping to protect biodiversity, enhance rural landscapes and support our countryside now and for future generations.

This work forms part of wider national efforts by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), our national charity, which launched the nationwide project in 2021 and has been planting and restoring hedgerows across England ever since. This winter marked Gloucestershire’s third season of involvement, bringing the total length of hedgerow restored in the county to nearly 6 kilometres since 2023.
