Celebrate Love Your Countryside Month with our guided walk at Ebworth
Our Stroud District Committee invites you to join us in for a walk at Ebworth to celebrate CPRE’s Love Your Countryside Month!
Taking place at the picturesque Old Ebworth Centre, between Cranham and Sheepscombe, this special guided walk offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Gloucestershire’s countryside while uncovering fascinating stories from its past. The event is being held by kind permission of the National Trust.
Leading the walk will be Elisabeth Skinner, a local historian from Sheepscombe, who will share insights into the area’s rich heritage as participants make their way across fields, along historic tracks and through ancient woodland.
Along the route, walkers will discover the answers to some intriguing local mysteries:
- Who was the rogue owner of Ebworth’s Georgian mansion in 1812?
- Where can a rare Victorian dew pond be found?
- Why is the woodland track known as Saltridge?
- What was Laurie Lee’s connection to the local cricket ground?
- And who claimed to have seen an angel from St George’s Field?
The circular walk begins at 2pm and is expected to last approximately two hours. The route includes one low stile and some gentle climbs. Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on leads throughout the walk.
After the walk, participants can relax and enjoy tea, soft drinks and cake at Ebworth while chatting with fellow countryside enthusiasts.
