| Stroud is a bustling market town with a population of 11,500. It was famous in the 18th century as a wool town with large wool mills running down the valley. The Thames/Severn Canal, soon to be restored, runs through the town. The District itself lies amongst the rolling Cotswold Hills dotted with Cotswold stone villages. Over half the District lies within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with sheep still being the main source of agriculture. Laurie Lee's book 'Cider with Rosie' was set in the village of Slad, depicting life in the Cotswolds as it used to be in olden days. |
