| The District covers all that area from Gloucester City in the north to the boundary with South Gloucestershire in the area of Stone and Hillesley in the south to the River Severn to the west and the escarpement in the East.
The area is mainly dairy farms and light industry. The main settlements are Stonehouse, Frampton on Severn, Berkeley, Dursley and Wotton under Edge.
Very little of the area receives protection of AONB and therefore has to accept a very high proportion of the housing allocated to the County.
It is the oldest developed area of the the county on account of the Severn which provided communication.
